BUTTERWORTH, Tues:
Two fishermen turned heroes today when they saw a man fall off the Penang Bridge and rushed to his aid.
The drama unfolded about 1pm when the man, who is in his 40s, was travelling in a car with several others for an appointment at a hospital on the island.
It is learnt the man, whose identity could not be ascertained, asked the driver to pull over at the emergency lane when they reached the Penang Bridge.
He told the driver that he wanted to ease himself but the occupants of the car were shocked when the saw the man suddenly jump off the bridge.
The fishermen who were nearby immediately sped to help him when they saw the man struggling in the water.
They later managed to pull him into their boat before rushing the man to a jetty in Prai where an ambulance was waiting.
The man was immediately rushed to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment.
Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Shah Hussain Shah who confirmed the incident said the man was in stable condition and police were investigating the case.

NIBONG TEBAL (May 10, 2009) : A couple died while their two daughters were seriously injured when the car they were travelling in skidded and hit a road sign at the KM156 of the North South Expressway near Sungai Bakap today.Seberang Perai Selatan district OCPD Supt Shafien Mamat said Ang Peng Lian, 50 and his wife Chan Oi Wan, 52, died at the scene in the 1pm incident.
Their daughters Ang Chee How, 17, and Ang Chee Wai, 21, were admitted to the Seberang Jaya Hospital here, he said when contacted.
The four, from Georgetown, were trapped in the Perodua Kembara car following the impact and were taken out by fire and rescue department personnel, he said. — BERNAMA

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police detained 31 foreigners, including three women, for various immigration offences during an eight-hour operation in Seberang Prai Tengah on Friday.
Acting district police chief Superintendent Mohan Singh said 141 foreigners were screened during the operations conducted at Seberang Jaya, Machang Bubuk, Bukit Tengah, Prai, Juru and here between 1pm and 9pm.
Those detained were from Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal and Indonesia, aged between 20 and 30. Many of them did not have valid work permits.
Mohan said the operation was aimed at checking the recent increase in the number of snatch thefts, wayside robberies, motorcycles thefts and car break-in cases in the district involving foreigners.

BUTTERWORTH: Almost 70% of the 948 Nikko Electronics Bhd workers who were retrenched when the wireless toy manufacturer suddenly closed its Prai factory 10 months ago, have yet to find new jobs.
Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Penang branch secretary K. Veeriah said most of them were women, aged above 25.
